Tbilisi University was founded in 1918. The inspirer and founder of the University was Ivane Javakhishvili.

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University is a major scientific-educational complex, 20 faculties, 5 branches, 2 scientific-research institutes, 57 scientific-research laboratories, 9 republic research centers, 5 educational bases (in different regions of Georgia), physical and mathematical boarding-school, University school, scientific library, 7 museums, publishing house, printing-press, art and cultural center, students' hostel, conference center, etc. function at the University.

More than 30000 students study at the University. The total number of collaborators is approximately 5000. Since January 1992 Ivane Javallliishvili Tbilisi State University has become an Autonomous higher educational establishment. As till 1925 year the University is recognized all over the world for its scientific schools those of mathematics, psychology, physiology, orientalistics.

Particularly notable are National scientific schools owing to which Kartvelology became an international scientific discipline. In nearly all the branches of the University science there function 22 Qualification Councils conferring scientific degrees of Doctor and Candidate. Medical department was restored at the University in 1993. The University has five branches: in Sukhumi, Akhaltsikhe, Ozurgeti, Signaghi and Zugdidi.

Basic and applied research is carried on at the University.

Thilisi University has close scientific and educational contacts with many well-known scientific-pedagogical centers of the world. Students are widely engaged in scientific-research work. The University students are engaged in amateur art performance.

The students' achievements in sports are notable. Many champions of the World, Europe and Georgia study at the University.
